U.S. Starting 11 v. Algeria

The United States Starting Eleven for today's match against Algeria has been announced:

  • GK: Howard
  • D: Cherundolo, DeMerit, Bocanegra (c), Bornstein
  • MF: Donovan, Bradley, Edu, Dempsey
  • F: Gomez, Altidore

Clearly, the shocker there is no Oguchi Onyewu on defense. Gooch has not been stellar in the first two matches. Fanhouse is reporting Onyewu's benching is a "coach's decision." Very interesting stuff. Jonathan Bornstein is in the lineup in place of Gooch, giving the U.S. more speed to attack via the wings.

Coach Bob Bradley messing with his lineup for the vital win or go home game opens the door for a lot of second guessing and Monday Morning Quarterbacking. I kinda like it though; I've been critical of Gooch and I think it's pretty gutsy of Bradley to sit one of his best--well he's considered one of his best--players.

Remember, here's the qualification scenario for the U.S.:

  1. Win and they're in.
  2. Tie and they still advance if England loses
  3. Tie and England ties and U.S. maintains its goal differential advantage.

U.S. Starting Eleven v. Slovenia

United States coach Bob Bradley has named his Starting Eleven for today's World Cup 2010 Group C match against Slovenia:

  • GK: Tim Howard
  • D: Steve Cherundolo, Jay DeMerit, Oguchi Onyewu, Carlos Bocanegra
  • MF: Clint Dempsey, Michael Bradley, Jose Torres, Landon Donovan
  • F: Jozy Altidore, Robbie Findley.

So obviously, the change there is Ricardo Clark out, Jose Torres in. Addition by subtraction if you ask me, though some have noted Slovenia's size up front may challenge Torres.

Don't Call It a Comeback--Well Yeah, It's Back

Mea culpa.

I've ignored my little space in the football blogosphere long enough. I promise to get back at it--and soon. Some personal issues (nothing serious) required my undivided attention since my last post on Nov. 17 of last year; jeez that's awful when you say it out loud.

I missed the bulk of the league and Champions League seasons--well, I followed everything, I just didn't blog about it. Bummer for me because I enjoy doing it so much.

But hey, we're back, and back in time for World Cup qualifying, Confederations Cup and the silly season of transfers and "Will Ronaldo go to Real Madrid?" talk. Can't wait.

See you soon.

Happy Birthday Starting Eleven

StartingEleven turns 1 today. On Nov. 13, 2007, I kicked it off with a short post, simply--and cleverly if you ask me--titled "Conception."

Since then, almost 25,000 page views later, I've hosted visitors from all over the world and received comments from some smart--and not so-smart--folks. From me to you, thanks.

I hope it's a fun read for you. I hope I entertain and inform. I hope I entice you to come back over and over.

I would like to see this grow, but I don't have a lot of time to do more than I do. But I do enjoy it, the subject matter never fails, and when you hit a nerve, it's fun to see the response from readers.

Send some gifts and well wishes via comments, and we'll see what we can do in Year No. 2.

Until then, here are a few famous No. 1's.

Ernst Stavro Blofeld

Gilles Gilbert

Katherine Heigl

Anna Kournikova

and Vitor Damas

Liverpool-Marseille: More Reds Magic in Store?

If Liverpool has more Champions League magic in reserve, it will have to bring it out in force tomorrow in France against Marseille. Sitting 13th in the French Ligue I, Marseille might seem like a pushover for the Reds, who have been in contention in the Premiership since Day 1. But Marseille are no pushovers. It has beaten Monaco and Metz, and tied Lille in its last three domestic matches. In Europe, it has beaten Besiktas and Liverpool and tied F.C. Porto. Marseille needs today’s match as much as Liverpool.

Oh You Beauty has its take on the Reds’ possible Starting Eleven:

Reina
Finnan Carragher Hyypia Arbeloa
Benayoun Gerrard Mascherano Babel
Kuyt Torres

With Agger and Alonso out, it’s arguable that this is Liverpool’s strongest XI. The only differences I contemplated were Kewell for Babel (I’ll still argue that Babel is better served coming off the bench, but he didn't feature at all on Saturday) and Voronin for Kuyt, as Voro’s done well in previous European games.

Of course, that means this probably won’t be the team, but I can’t see that many changes even if it’s not. Other than Babel and Voronin, Lucas and Riise are probably in contention, but I don’t see room in the starting line-up for say, Crouch or Sissoko, both of whom played 90 minutes on Saturday. We certainly won’t see a line-up like the one against Marseille at Anfield.

Personally, I’m rooting for the story. ESPN2 has the game live at 2:30 p.m. ET and there would be nothing better than tie score in the 80th minute and the two teams desperate for the goal that puts them through to the knockout stages. Liverpool thrives once the Champions League hits the final 16, and going in as a No. 2 seed, the Reds are bound to draw a tough foe in the next round. If it gets through, don’t be surprised to see Liverpool soar through to the final four; and how about a semifinal quartet with heavy English: United, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal? Sweet dreams; I think Inter, Real and Barca would have something to say about that.
